Steering clear of historical accounts, symbolic representations of life's struggles and metaphoric garble for now. Whats left....... is now.
This house can get very quiet. If it weren't for the hum of the fridge, the whirrrr of the hard drive, the furnace kicking on and off, the wind howling outside, the car that just went by, the screen door thumping against the front door jam and the clicking of this keyboard, there wouldn't be any sound at all. If there was no sound at all then, I might hear something else.
When I'm alone, I sleep with the radio on. I hear British accents all night long. When I wake up in the morning, I feel a little more sophisticated than I did when I went to sleep.
People hate the quiet. I do too..... sometimes.
The wind is blasting cold air out of the northwest because of a large coastal storm that is forming out in the Atlantic off of the maritimes. I saw it on "Weather On The Nines" while I was trying to escape the quiet earlier. I bet its snowing like a mother in Barneveld and I'm certain that the waves are crashing over the breakwall in Oswego. I think it would really suck to be on a ship that's headed out to the St. Lawrence seaway. I'm glad I don't work on a ship that's in the middle Lake Ontario right now.
The lake here is frozen. The ducks and geese are gone. People are burning their good wood now. It smells nice. I have the thermostat at 55 and I wonder if the cold in here is going to kill my house plants this winter. All the plants I got last year are alive but one. I think the mice are moving back into my basement for the winter. Its OK...... all fun and games until someone tries to eat the peanut butter.
I wonder if Farmer Bob's cows ever get to go inside. I also wonder what it would be like to be in a big longhouse right now smoking a pipe while a fire burned in the middle of a dirt floor and people spoke softly in native tongue from their bunks, words I didn't know in a smokey longhouse..
I wonder because I live in a cape cod with vinyl siding, a furnace and a radio that plays the bbc all night long. I don't even have a fire place.
