The Fifth of July

It might be time for a bit of a rant. I've had some unexpected time to watch too-much TV during the past couple of days.
-
I watched a piece on wounded servicemen being rehabbed by learning to ride the same the horses that are used to pull the casket wagon at Arlington Cemetery. I watched Tiger Woods play golf with some service men. I watched our president speak to a National Guard unit in West Virginia and presidential candidates vie for votes in Iowa by pretending to take an interest in the price of corn and beans in their conversations with farmers.
-
My mom and dad always said that it’s not good to question the leadership of our country at a time of war. I think it would be very hard for them to say this to me now.
-
I guess we still haven't hit that point as a nation of being totally and completely fed up with how things are going. Maybe we never will unless the cable TV goes out or our cell phones stop working. Our patriotism has been exploited by an administration that is dripping with American Arrogance. It’s the arrogance that brought us some comfort in the months after 9-11 and again when we went to war. Its also the same arrogance that this administration has used to build its power base by intensifying the polarity between our country and the Islamic cultures of the world thus, exponentially increasing the number of people in the world who wish harm upon us.
-
Its probably not fair to just blame the executive branch. Many of those who knew better sat quietly off to the side, sealing their lips or implying support out of their fear of not being re-elected or being tagged by a right-wing radio talk show jock as "unpatriotic."
-
Our soldiers have done everything that has been asked of them and the armed forces have done their best while trying to cater to their clueless political bosses back home. This thing went awry through the shortsightedness of its planners. Planners who rode the coat tails of our skilled armed forces in winning the battle, only to stand in their offices grinning as the statue Sadham fell with their thumbs’ deep up their asses while they said things like….
-
"Um Gee ….. What do you think we should do now?"
-
"I know, lets decommission the Iraqi National Army"….. Great Idea!!
-
"Hey, my friend’s kid just graduated from College and he hasn’t worked since the campaign, lets get him and some of his frat buddies over there to run the country…. I think he took a class in Mideastern Culture" (If you think I am making this up, you are horribly wrong)
-
"Don’t listen to that Powell, guy. He’s different than us, he actually served… besides, we kept him around long enough to get re-elected, we don’t need him"
-
It went awry as the result of American arrogance that made it impossible to understand Mid Eastern Culture and the failure of those in power to listen to those who knew in the military. It went awry on the egos of Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowicz, Pearle and unfortunately, our president. Their arrogance has failed the citizens of the United States, the Iraqi people and, most importantly, our service men and women who continue to lose lives and limbs on a daily basis in a conflict that has become all about saving face.
-
It seems that we have built a new playground in Iraq for the burgeoning lot of misguided religious zealots who can easily convince a hopeless or angry young person to embark upon suicide a mission. Maybe our soldiers in Iraq are in fact keeping us safe here at home by driving around in convoys like sittign ducks while they wait for the next roadside bomb to go off and blow off one of their arms, legs or take a life. Its an interesting approach to the war on terror; wouldn’t you say?
-
From this point on (I am being gracious), I contend that every soldier killed in Iraq will be a sacrifice for the petty ego's of our shortsighted administration that finds it impossible to admit that they have made an egregious error. I have no patience for those who can’t see beyond the end of their noses.

I suppose George W. Bush has guts. Its too bad he lacks the candle power to go with them and for the people whom he takes his advice from...... grrr
